February 20 — the beginning of Maslenitsa (Maslenitsa Week)
Maslenitsa is one of the most joyful and bright holidays.
For a whole week, people see off the boring winter, bake pancakes and visit each other.
During the Carnival period, a symbolic name was invented for each day.
- From Monday they celebrate Maslenitsa. On this day, the baking of pancakes began, to which relatives were invited. But a special fate was prepared for the first pancake – a beggar was treated to it. An effigy was also being prepared, which was displayed in rags in a place of honor in the village for viewing before its burning on Sunday.
- Tuesday is called a "Game." It is dedicated to youth fun, meeting girls with guys, sledding, slides, etc. The successful choice of the second half did not exclude holding a wedding already on the Red Hill.
- On Wednesday, all mothers-in-law invited their sons-in-law to pancakes. A large number of pancakes eaten foreshadowed a happy life in a young family. In addition, it was accepted to conduct horse races and fist fights.
- Thursday gives rise to a Wide Carnival and is dedicated to fun. Regardless of age, including the youngest children and the elderly, everyone takes part in games, slides, dances, round dances and other fun. It is strictly forbidden to be sad. This is fraught not only with public condemnation, but with sorrows in the future.
- On Friday, the mother-in-law visits her son-in-law. The requirements are similar to the environment. A plentiful table, friendliness and generosity guarantee good luck in family life.
- Saturday is called sister-in-law gatherings. The task of the young wife was to invite her husband's relatives, treat them with various dishes, conduct conversations with them and distribute gifts. For unmarried girls, this day was favorable for holding Shrovetide divination for the betrothed.
- Sunday is marked by the departure of winter, as well as the end of the festive festivities. The public burning of an effigy meant the onset of spring.
- After that, Great Lent begins, for which you need to prepare. Everyone asked each other for forgiveness for all the evil words, actions and even thoughts directed against their neighbor. The main principle is as follows: to repent from the bottom of your heart to your family and friends and forgive them yourself.
